Week 7

Why did I pick Abi to work with?

Hes a good friend of mine, and it seems he is also a bit interested in Linux, I've worked with him before and hes a good worker. I didn't really know if I was going to work in a group or work single in the begining but I guess I just ended up picking Abi in the end.

I will work with Abi in the future as we've done in the past, he does his work like he should, and does it ok, sometimes I do the hard stuff and leave the "looking good" editing up to him. But he does do his part in the projects.

To make this project and other projects easier on myself and Abi, a timeline like the one in this one should be made so we know what we have to do that week, and what to expect in comming weeks, maybe leave a week blank to "catch up" or to do editing / add new things, that we can come up with.

past:

Installed Fedora, upgraded it, installed KDE, LAMPP, and WINE, attempted to work with Samba

Future:

Install Gentoo via command line, install Wine, KDE, and LAMPP in gentoo (if possible - if time doesn't get exceeded)

Week 6

This week wasn't really great, I wasn't here Monday and Tuesday (No transportation, and feild trip).I did install some fedora updates, and tried to configure pure-ftpd but that didn't work very well. I'm going to find out why the repositories are messed up, I am unable to update using the graphical interface, probably because the FTP in fedora isn't working very well and it messed up the repositories. After Fedora i'm going to install and try Gentoo, another linux distribution but much harder and more advanced, but the advantage is it uses less ram, runs better, can run almost any application unlike fedora, completely customizable, and its "empty" as in it contains no additional features, you have to install them.Fedora hasn't worked very well for me over the years (probably because i'm not a linux expert), I always liked ubuntu better but the main reason why I picked this as I did is because I want to learn linux (experiment with it in a virtual enviroment) the only bad thing is, it worksb extremly slow and not as fast as I want it to be.

For the next couple of weeks i'm going to try working with pure-ftpd so I can atleast get a FTP server setup on my virtual machine, I already have LAMPP installed, I tried installing KDE 4 but there are so many steps required to install KDE 4, and I found out also that KDE 4 isn't supported in Fedora until Fedora 9, which I can't wait because I love linux updates (Gui is better, easier to use). Back in Fedora core 5 (the version I originally used a long time ago) has changed alot. Though they still use YUM.

Week 5

This week I’ve been quite out of it with the allergies, so not the best for me, though I have tried to do some things (even at home), at home I’ve decided to give up Fedora and move back to windows, Fedora is good in all but its still too advanced for me, though I will still keep trying to understand this mysterious operating system that puzzles me (I’m going to stay with ubuntu for the time being). Though I do like Fedora I really don't want to learn just Fedora, I want to learn the whole operating system. I'm probably going to have to format my Fedora Operating system here because the stupid FTP in it will fail to work and it messed up the repositories (where it gets updates, etc..) by me trying to upgrade to Fedora 9 (read week 4's post).

Code Examples:

- yum install <what to install> - Install somethin... Pidgin (instant messenger), Firefox, Email, ect...

- cd <directory> - CD = Change Directory

- ./<command> - Starts / executes something

- make install - Install the program

- ./configure - configures program with set variables

- su -c '<command>' - Run a command as su (Super user)

Week 4

Bored as anything this whole week, but I’ve been working on Fedora (updating... of course)... I finally installed HTTP (might have to update), MySQL, php, and phpmyadmin. I will install more later on (Perl??). Now I’m awaiting the new release of Fedora, which is called Fedora Core 9 Sulphur. Which is supposed to be released 18 days from today (April, 11) [countdown is at bottom of page, JavaScript required]

If you do plan on installing Fedora, there is a nice community out there ready to help you with any questions you have, make sure to follow the rules though.

The forums are located HERE That is the official fedora forums, so you won't be receiving support for the Windows operating system.

Week 3

This week was hectic, projects, NOCTI testing, and all this other stuff.

I installed KDE, upgraded Fedora, tried to upgrade to Fedora 9 (beta) but the FTP (File Transfer Protocol) was not working so I could not update the repositories, which is required to upgrade Fedora using YUM.

I'm not ready to install LAMP yet, maybe next week. The other big problem is Fedora updates taking awhile, and since were using VMware machines it takes a while for Linux to boot, and to install updates. I attempted to install KDE 4, but its only available in Fedora 9, which was why I tried to upgrade. Though I did install KDE4Base it didn't show in the session menu.

Maybe next week

- Kyle & Abi
